A Mom's Sight is Restored
In addition to her two beautiful daughters, Carol Carter has witnessed two miracles in her life. Without the generous donation of two tissue donors, Carol’s life would be strikingly different, and she is extraordinarily grateful each day that she awakens and can see—clearly—what many of us take for granted. At age 12, Carol’s vision began deteriorating due to a progressive, degenerative disorder, Keratoconus, in which the cornea thins and changes shape. The change causes distorted vision and decreased functioning as the disorder progresses.
Carol received her first cornea transplant in her mid-20s and went from legally blind to once again being able to function more fully. Prior to the transplant, she was unable to see any images clearly, “just a blurred glare.” Who could deny Carol’s large- as well as small-scale needs? “You want to see your children, and you want to see the clock for yourself,” Carol says.
Today, after her second cornea transplant, Carol has 20/30 vision and extends her heartfelt thanks to all donor families without whom her miracles would not have happened. It is with enormous gratitude to her donors and their families that she can “look over at the alarm clock and see the numbers clearly…(and)… attend my oldest daughter’s dance recital and see her on stage,” she says.
