On July 28, 2021 I was notified by the police that my 22 year old son Curran was in an accident on his motorcycle, within minutes of getting to the hospital it was clear that he would not survive. An ER nurse held up his drivers license showing me that he was an organ donor then asked if I would honor his decision and without even a second to think about it I said absolutely, I wasn’t going to deny my sons decision to help save others.
Curran was very active, he was a boxer who ran 10 miles a day, he was learning French and Arabic with plans to travel the world as a translator after college. Curran had dreams opening his own boxing gym and wanted to keep it free for amateur fighters in the Saint Louis and surrounding areas. He was also vegan and lived an extremely healthy lifestyle so I knew we needed to give others a chance at a healthy life because that was very important to him. He was so kind, never judgmental and loved life more than anyone I have ever met. Curran was a stranger to no one, he would meet someone new everywhere he went and was always willing to help anyone no matter the circumstances, he was also the type of friend who made everyone want to do better and I am honored to be his mom.
Curran was able to donate both kidneys, one to a local woman and the other to a man in another state. I received an update letter a couple months later letting us know his recipients were doing well and that gave our family some joy during this extremely hard time.
I’m incredibly grateful to be part of his final journey and I hope his story inspires others to become organ donors
